Remote Grading in 2025

Not in Brisbane, not even in Australia? Today it doesn’t really matter where you are, most post production artists are available remotely. This means you shoot your project as normal then upload your media for either editing , sound, VFX or color. You can watch live , drop in and out at any time or review a WIP version at the end of the day. All options are generally available. The most important thing is that each remote artist has a dedicated calibrated room, exactly the same as if you were sitting colouring in the same bay. This means calibrated monitoring, correct room environment and the hardware powerful enough to grade the footage you are suppling.

Now I know you could probably edit a project in Starbucks using a laptop and a decent pair of head phones, but this is defiantly not the case with color grading where the artist must have total confidence in their set up. A number of color space aware solutions are available for the viewer. The main ones are from Colorfront, Streambox, and Clearview. The Resolve Cloud is also and option for folk that are using Resolve.

The best thing is to talk to your colorist as early as possible in the schedule. There will be a solution based on how many viewers and where they need to review the grade.
